Appearances | BS1
Hein appears for the first time in the first BLACKSOULS game – he appears as the Black Arbiter Hein.
Meeting Hein
Hein is pretty easy to miss. You can find him for the first time in the first house to the right in the secluded area up above further in the Graveyard Town Elixir – he will be there all alone and he definitely stands out from all the other enemies you can find in the area.
If you have 8 sins or more, he will attack you. If not, then you can access his shop and buy plenty of Black Souls and Tainted Black Souls. He’s one of the more relaxed characters in the game.
When you talk to Hein for the first time while you have a low amount of sins, he will be surprised that you’re still fine, saying how if you were a “scoundrel”, he would’ve taken your soul.
If you talk to Hein some more, he will say that the Black Trial exists to devour the souls of sinners and villains. He says that it’s all to bring peace and harmony to the world and that once your sins pile up, they’ll come for you too – Hein will exclaim how he can’t wait for that while laughing mischievously.
Hotel Poseidon
Hein can appear at Hotel Poseidon right after you’re done fighting Pinocchio.
He will teleport behind you and complain about how that was his target, but once he hears Baphomet ordered it he will say it’s fine. Before he leaves he will tell you that he’s one of the four reapers of the Black Trial, Hein, and that he’s the strongest in the Black Trial.
Black Court Interactions
Hein will leave the house and appear at the Black Court once you start doing quests for Baphomet, and once you finish the quest where you have to kill Pinocchio.
When you talk to Hein at the Black Court, he will ask if you want some advice from your future senior. Hein will then go on to tell you that you can’t do a black trial half-heartedly, he says that to execute you must have both strength and conviction. He says that there’s no retirement in the Black Trial and that the orders of the boss and seniors are absolute.
If you tell him “That’s the plan”, he will say that that makes even him look forward to your growth, but he tells you to not even try to overtake him. He will then complain a bit, saying how he was the oldest, the strongest, but “they” just overtook him like it’s nothing.
If you tell him “Black working conditions”, he will laugh at you and say that they’re being employed by a great country too. He then says that the Demonic Princesses are pretty good business partners.
When you talk to Hein again, he will ask if you know about the four executives of the Black Trial.
He will then go on to describe his colleagues, and there you may learn some useful information about the Black Trial members.
Hein says that the first executive is Vanguard Lindamea, he says that Lindamea is the only one who’s in the Black Trial as long as he. Hein calls him impossibly loyal to Baphomet, and from his point of view he’s “just a good dog”.
The second executive is Chaplain Ezwald, he says that he thinks Ezwald was a priest before, and that his results in the Black Trial were excellent. Ezwald went insane though, he left the Black Trial and is now missing – Hein calls him stupid.
The third executive is Condemner Miranda, he calls her battle-crazy, and also mentions that she’s the Black Trial’s last addition and yet she hunts souls like “she’s another Lindamea”. Hein admires her ability and calls her cheeky.
And to end this conversation, he tells you that the strongest of them is Lord Hein and that you should never forget that.
Hein doesn’t care for ordinary souls, he only likes those full of taint – “the fruits of the highest quality”. He says that he waits for them to harvest until they’re fully ripe, so his presence in the Black Court doesn’t mean he’s skipping work.
When you finish all Baphomet’s quests, Hein will say that he’s glad Baphomet recognized you. He will tell you that once you join the Black Trial, it would be nice if you two went hunting quality souls together.
When Baphomet leaves for the Holy Forest, you can talk to Hein again. Hein will be very confused that Baphomet is gone, and he will panic, saying how this situation is bad and not good at all. Hein will remark how the world is done for and that he needs to run, he will laugh devilishly while saying how it’s all over, and then he will be gone.

Fighting Black Arbiter Hein
If you decide to fight Hein or if he decides to fight you, then good luck because he’s quite strong with his attacks and plenty of health that he has.
Hein will be hostile towards you if you have 8 sins or more.
Appearances | BS2
Hein makes another appearance in the second game – this time as Black Conductor Hein.
Meeting Hein
You will meet Hein in the Abandoned Station Hanover. He’s the conductor and the only person that can help you get to Queensland. You can fight him or buy Black Souls and Tainted Black Souls from him, just like you were able to in the first game.
He didn’t change at all, despite that he now works as a conductor.
To get into the train you will need a Train Ticket. To get one you should go talk to the Duchess and then calm her down by giving her pepper and meat. Talk to her some more and after talking about where did Alice go, she will give you a ticket that can get you past Hein.
Endings F/G
If you met Meryphillia and beat her in a fight at least once, then during Endings F and G, you will have a unique interaction with her, Hein, Jubjub, Jabberwock, and Bandersnatch.
While going through the Little Girl’s Nightmare area, you will eventually be stopped by Jubjub, and then Bandersnatch and Jabberwock will appear as well to prevent you from escaping Wonderland. But before any fighting happens, Meryphillia will come from behind Jubjub, knocking her away from you and allowing you to choose whether to stay with her and fight the Three Nightmares, or continue going through the Little Girl’s Nightmare.
If you stay with Meryphillia, you will have to fight the Three Nightmares with her.
Jabberwock will come behind Meryphillia to take her head but then Hein will appear out of nowhere, saving Meryphillia from Jabberwock. Hein is furious, so Jabberwock teases him by asking him what’s the matter, telling him that he got his desired dream but he still wants to wake up.
Hein will then say that he has been in the audience for so long and yet he still remembered, he says that it’s Miranda’s fault that he had to climb onto the stage again, and he’s very vocal about how he’s fed up with everything that’s happening right now.
Meryphillia will call him by his name, and Hein will scold her because she didn’t say “Lord Hein”, he will then complain about how it’s such a pain to be in charge of “foolish juniors”.
Everyone will slowly get ready to fight each other, and Meryphillia will ask Hein if he can handle it. Hein will laugh, and ask Meryphillia who she thinks he is, all while declaring that he’s the strongest of the Black Trial, Lord Hein. He then continues with how this is the only time they’re joining forces because he will get out of this “sham of a dream” and become a real conductor in reality.
You will be able to say “Your soul burns” or “You’re risking your life”
If you say “Your soul burns”, Hein will say how you get it, and that his soul is ablaze and it urges him to act – he says that it’s not a hunt, but a battle that it wants. The other dialogue choice will give you a response from Meryphillia.
Then, the fight with the Three Nightmares will start.
After the fight with the Three Nightmares is over, Jabberwock will dispose of Jubjub and Bandersnatch because they don’t want to cooperate anymore with her plans.
You three will be left alone with Jabberwock.
Meryphillia will remark that Jabberwock reminds her of Baphomet, saying how she’s not of this world. Hein will say that Jabberwock is a Great One – describing them as the race of “Cosmos<Heaven>”, they who hold the finest corrupted souls, they who have the power to control or destroy stars.
Jabberwock will laugh and tell him to not lump her in with these Great Ones, because she has no childish dreams of ruling worlds and such. Her only interest is to see just how black can your souls become – she describes herself as a mother watching over her kids, who can’t help but wish to root for them.
Jabberwock wants you all to stay in this mad land because that’s the place where your black souls can grow to the very extremes of chaos.
If you say “This isn’t happening”, Hein will say that refusing Jabberwock seems like death to him. He will laugh and say that there’s nothing they can tell this “nonsensical being” to settle this without a fight. The other dialogue option gets you dialogue from Meryphillia where she continues comparing Jabberwock to Baphomet.
And then you will get into a fight with Jabberwock.
After you’re done fighting Jabberwock, she and Meryphillia will talk for a little bit before she disappears. Meryphillia will tell her that it would’ve been fine if the Great Ones gave a little bit more love to their children and humans, she’s puzzled as to why can’t Jabberwock understand that. Jabberwock will be confused by Meryphillia’s remark, finishing the conversation with how there’s nothing fun about watching simple and honest love.
Jabberwock will disapper, and Hein will tell Meryphillia to not preach reason to them, because even he didn’t understand it back then.
It seems like Hein is severely wounded.
If you ask Hein “Hein, are you okay?”, he will tell you that it’s “Lord Hein” for you.
If you say “We need to stop the blood”, Hein will tell you to not speak nonsense, as he’s not an undead so his body is just one big wound by now.
Meryphillia will then call out Hein’s name and he will say “Dammit… No respect for me anymore…”, probably because she didn’t address him by “Lord Hein”. Hein will then say that he’s done for and that this last battle was too much for him – he says that he’s dying this time for sure.
Meryphillia will say “God of Death, don’t die… If you die now, my dreams will only get worse…”
Hein will laugh, and tell Meryphillia how she has become much more human while he wasn’t around. He says that once he dies, every night, he will sit by her bed eating tasty souls and show off. Hein says that if he survives, he thinks it would be good to invite Lindamea too, but before he can finish what he wanted to say, Meryphillia will apologize to you and say that she can’t help you anymore and that she’s leaving the rest to you.
Meryphillia says that you should meet again, once this world collapses and once everyone returns to reality alive.
They will then be gone.

Fighting the Black Conductor Hein
If you don’t have a Train Ticket, you can also fight Hein.
You can still fight him regardless of that if you just want to kill him.
He’s strong and you shouldn’t take this fight lightly, especially if this is your first cycle.
If you’re strong enough to take a large portion of his health, he’ll slowly start remembering you because that’s the strength he saw once before, but he will not be able to remember anything, and that will enrage him.
Killing him will give you a lot of souls, a few Black Souls, and the Arbiter’s Scythe.
