Frumious Bandersnatch

Bandersnatch is an important character in BLACKSOULS that appears in both games. She’s based on Lewis Carroll’s Bandersnatch from “Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There” and “The Hunting of the Snark”.

In the first game, Bandersnatch plays a minor role, while in the second game, her role is more significant.

Bandersnatch appears in the first BLACKSOULS game as an NPC and a relatively minor character.

Meeting Bandersnatch

Bandersnatch is always going to be in the Finished Tea Party area. There she will be guarding the entrance to Alice’s Library, where you can find Alice-02 and empty bookshelves for putting in fairytales.

If you want to get past her then you will have to listen to her riddle and give the correct answer to it.

She will start the riddle by saying “Roughly seven teacups are my alarm clocks. Struggling to reach the trial the Dodo bird’s suggestion, what a harassment. I never could judge golf right. Card soldiers?”. Then she will ask you “I ask, is Jack of Hearts not a criminal? Which choice have been yours?”.

You will have four choices, them being “Pepper’s evidence”, “Sea turtle soup”, “Cheshire’s meat”, and “Or, perhaps, Humpty-Dumpty?”.

Her response to “Pepper’s evidence” is “Right up until she lost her temper, Queen slept!”, and then she will fight you for getting it wrong.

Her response to “Sea turtle soup” is “Ah, human flesh, but it is filled with guilt!”, and then she will fight you for getting it wrong.

Her response to “Cheshire’s meat” is “She’s so unsatisfying, that you can only
grin and laugh!”, and then she will fight you for getting it wrong.

And her response to “Or, perhaps, Humpty-Dumpty?” is “Did the duchess forget seasoning Such an egg!”, and then she will fight you for getting it wrong.

Because neither of those choices is correct, all you have to do is decline to answer by backing out of the dialogue options. Bandersnatch will then move aside and welcome you to Wonderland.

One of the rabbits roaming around Wonderland will give you a hint about how to solve Bandersnatch’s riddle.

Fighting Bandersnatch

If you get the riddle wrong or if you try to kill Bandersnatch you will get in a fight with her, she’s a large purple monster that’s very strong, so in most cases, you should avoid trying to fight her. Her riddle is easy to solve.

When you try to kill Bandersnatch before the fight she will say “Late Jabberwock, and nearby a Griffon’s showing on display!”

Bandersnatch makes an appearance in the second game as well, but she has been completely reworked, just like Jabberwock.

Meeting Bandersnatch, again

You can find Bandersnatch at a certain part of the Fuming Forest – the entrance to her lair is on a piece of land connected by rail bridges, and there will be a fog you have to go through.

Once you go through the fog she will come down and try to fight you but ultimately fail and fall, but she will then come at you once again before you’re able to get to the other side and then you will have to fight her for real.

Bandersnatch is a strong enemy – you can summon Robin Hood before the fight, and even Vernai, but under the right conditions.

Bandersnatch’s Dwelling

When you defeat Bandersnatch she won’t immediately die. She will go back to her lair which you can enter through the doorway located on the piece of land where she attacks you for the first time.

When you come inside you will see a mysterious corpse if your SEN isn’t low, and a snowman that will say different things when you have high or low amounts of SEN.

When you interact with the snowman while your SEN is high, it will display a message going like this “To Bandersnatch, How are you? I’m now alive. This is a very nice place.”, and then Bandersnatch will say how she got it as a gift but the sender forgot to name themselves (but it’s most likely Jabberwock because she likes making snowmen).

You can break the snowman which will make Bandersnatch scream in agony – the snowman will leave a trail of blood.

If your SEN is 0 though the snowman will have a much more sinister facial expression, and he will say “To Bandersnatch, I want you in my collection. Locked in a cage, forever mine and mine alone. I want to love you, tease you, rape you, kill you, eat you.”, which sounds like something Jabberwock would come up with.

If you’re in a covenant with Bandersnatch you will be able to eat corpses after you upgrade it a little bit. You can then eat the mysterious corpse in her dwelling and she will be quite surprised, but will not get angry at you, because of the fact that she is a “magananimous soul”, at least according to her.

If you search the mysterious corpse you will get the Banker’s Ring.

Talking to Bandersnatch

When you talk to Bandersnatch for the first time in her lair she will not be too happy to see you come toward her, but she isn’t dangerous at all now that you beat her in a fight beforehand.

You can kill Bandersnatch and get the Soul of the Bandersnatch, you can send her to the dungeon, but you can also have a somewhat normal conversation with her.

You can tell Bandersnatch that you’re going to Alice and she will recognize that name in an instant. Bandersnatch will recall the time she was entrusted with guarding the library’s doors to protect that girl – Bandersnatch will have interesting things to say about the whole ordeal.

“Unmoved by rain, unwavering in the face of wind, feasting on rabbits’ flesh, where the tea party culminated, I was the bulwark of the library! It was the paradise for him and her and him. Howbeit, as a myriad of days went by, I lost to curiosity and sneaked a look inside… There, in the dark, I glimpsed upon a lump of flesh stained deep crimson. No doubt of that. The girl, Alice, lay dead….”

Bandersnatch will be angry at herself because she failed to protect Alice, even though she stood before the gates.

You can tell her that Alice isn’t dead and she will think that what she saw was just a dream, but she will instantly deny that possibility because she’s sure that Alice’s meat that she saw was absolute reality. If you keep silent she will say “Huff…huff…… The proud gatekeeper now God’s tool, reduced to being none more than a stray demonbeast. No hope to it all, not at all”.

Bandersnatch will realize you are an acquaintance of Alice so she will apologize and ask you to let her recompense for her sin. After that, you will be able to form a covenant with Bandersnatch.

Covenant

Bandersnatch is one of the characters in the game you can form a covenant with. Her covenant is really useful because it increases your attack damage by a significant amount, and it gives you a good chance to counterattack.

You can even eat corpses at a certain level of the covenant. That ability itself is morbid, but fun to use. Her covenant is expensive to level up, but you can use the souls you got from her fight for it.

When you form a covenant with her and talk to her she will say how she’s tired of hunting only Raths day by day, and that she really desires rabbit meat. She wonders where are the rabbits because she hasn’t even seen a single one.

When her covenant is on the first level she will talk about the full moon and how it always gets her thinking. Bandersnatch regrets not ever having another feast with Alice, but now she can feast with you instead – she remarks here how she hates dung pies.

Bandersnatch is quite inexperienced and naive when it comes to the other “benefits” of the covenant, which is really cute (in most cases at least).

Fighting Chaos of the Dark Star

If you have 0 SEN and if Bandersnatch is in her dwelling, then when you try to kill her you will initiate a fight with her nightmare form – Chaos of the Dark Star, who’s significantly stronger than her and also significantly scarier than the cute Bandersnatch you can usually see.

Endings F and G

If you met Meryphillia and beat her in a fight at least once, then you will be seeing Bandersnatch in a certain part of the events of Endings F and G. She will appear together with Jubjub and Jabberwock, all in an effort to ambush you and stop you from leaving Wonderland.

Meryphillia will come to help you fight the Three Nightmares, and if you decide to stay and fight with her then eventually even Hein will come and join you two.

After the fight is over Jubjub will decide she doesn’t want to fight you anymore and that she doesn’t care if you leave the dream. Bandersnatch will somewhat agree with her and say she was just testing your resolve.

Jabberwock will be disappointed and she will stop them from leaving by activating a curse seal, and after she and Jubjub argue for a little bit, Jabberwock will end up blasting off both Jubjub and Bandersnatch who are paralyzed.

Daughter Alice

Bandersnatch is the real identity of Daughter Alice. They’re both childish and she nicely fits the role of Daughter Alice, for more details about her design, interactions, and personality check out the Alice post.

During Ending H of the game the Three Alices will ambush you to stop you from leaving the dream. But Little Sister Alice, i.e. Jubjub, will save you from the two of them and allow you to escape – during this sequence, the Alices’ true identities will be shown.

And after Grimm leaves, Daughter Alice will say “You can’t take him all for yourself, it’s unfair, unfair, unfaaaair! No, no, noNONONONO!!! Papa belongs to Alice! To ALICE! TO ALICE!!!”

Personality

In the first and second games, Bandersnatch’s personality is quite frantic, although that comes to fruition in the second game where she’s in a more humanoid form. Bandersnatch is aggressive and violent, but she’s also really cute and especially passionate – she’s simple-minded and naive.

Bandersnatch frequently mentions Alice and she’s very dear to her, they seem to have had a somewhat close relationship.

Design

In the first game, Bandersnatch takes the form of a lion-like creature that may be a griffin. And when you come to fight her she takes the form of a giant purple monster.

While in the second game, Bandersnatch has a humanoid body with significant monster parts that differentiate her from a regular girl. She has big horns, a large spiky tail, huge claws, and strong monster feet.

While Bandersnatch looks dangerous, her face is really cute and her tan makes her really attractive. She gets angry when Robin Hood tells her he doesn’t like dark-skinned girls.
