Vernai can be found in different areas throughout the second game. He also has a unique storyline.
Meeting Vernai
You can find Vernai for the first time in the Rabbit Hole area. To get to him you need to pass through the door next to the Cheshire Cat, by unlocking it with the Master Key. Once you come into the Rabbit Hole go to the right and you will reach the bonfire with Vernai next to it.
There you can talk to him, and tell him you’re going to Alice.
Fighting Rabbit Knight Vernai
If you don’t like Vernai you can go on and try to kill him instead, but that will initiate a fight with him. Vernai is a tough enemy and when you take a certain amount of his health he’ll make a witty remark and heal himself.
Killing him will give you the Black Rabbit of Inaba fairytale.
Upon his death, he will comment on how he’s ending just like his father.
Fish Market
The next place where you can find Vernai after talking to him at the Rabbit Hole area is the Billingsgate Fish Market. He will be right by the bonfire, and he will introduce himself as Vernai to you, while also asking for your name in return.
There’s not much dialogue with him here.
Carroll River Encounter
If you met Vernai at the fish market the next place where he will be is the Carroll River – the part right before the fight with the Beast of Conceit that leads to Jabberwock.
He will be wounded, and you will have the option to finish him off without getting into a fight.
When you defeat the Beast of Conceit, go talk to Vernai again and you’ll be able to give him a Herb Flask. This will stop him from dying and you will be able to summon him as a dream spirit in your battle with Jabberwock.
Jabberwock and Vernai
When you stop Vernai from dying you will have the option to summon him as a dream spirit in your fight against Jabberwock. He’s a useful ally in this fight.
Vernai will recognize Jabberwock immediately, saying how he will make her regret for cursing his clan
There’s a unique interaction that can happen if you refuse to fight Jabberwock and instead initiate a fight by trying to rape her. If you summoned Vernai beforehand then he will be in this fight as well, and if you lose, you will be locked in a cell by Jabberwock and that’s when she will come to toy with you.
After Jabberwock sexually assaults you for a little bit, Vernai will intervene and yell at Jabberwock from the entrance of the cell.
Jabberwock compliments him for not running away even though he and Grimm got beat up – Jabberwock addresses Vernai as “Ver-ver”. She will proceed to tease Vernai about how you now only need her and no one else, so you can confirm or deny that in dialogue options with Vernai at that moment.
Jabberwock will be confused if you ask Vernai to save you, and then he will jump into the cell, kick her into the wall, and murder her by doing that. Other options will lead to him running away.
Vernai’s Storyline
To complete Vernai’s storyline you have to talk to him at the Rabbit Hole and the Billingsgate Fish Market. Then you have to go to the Carroll River before the fight with the Beast of Conceit, and then defeat the beast, and save him from dying by giving him a Herb Flask.
Afterward, you need to defeat Jabberwock, Jubjub, and Bandersnatch with Vernai by your side.
You will be able to see the letter at his past spot in the Carroll River area where he’s telling you to go to the Rabbit Hole. If you go there to meet him he will be glad to see you, revealing his feelings about this entire adventure he had with you while talking about some other stuff as well, which includes avenging his father.
Vernai is the descendent of the Prayer Master from the first BLACKSOULS game, hence why he’s a black rabbit, and why Jabberwock is familiar with him as well.
In the end, he will tell you to save Alice, and then he will die. He will drop the Moonlight Greatsword and the Black Rabbit of Inaba fairytale.
