Duchess Margaret von Tyrol

HomeBLACKSOULSDuchess Margaret von Tyrol

Duchess Margaret von Tyrol, or just Margaret, or the Duchess, is a character you can find in BLACKSOULS 2, at the Dinner Party area which is one of the rooms of the Duchess’ Mansion. She’s one of the characters you can form a covenant with.

The Duchess is a very impulsive and hungry woman based on the Duchess from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland book.

Appearances | BS2

The Duchess mostly stays inside her mansion so it’s easy to miss her if you don’t decide to go there.

Meeting the Duchess

The first time you’ll most likely encounter the Duchess is at the Dinner Party area, which you can get to by exploring many of the rooms you can find inside the Duchess’ Mansion. You will see a row of fogs separating her area, so that’s how you’ll know you’re near her.

The Duchess won’t acknowledge your presence right away, she’s in the middle of some kind of a frenzy as she’ll start spinning the pig she’s holding while muttering all sorts of stuff.

The player will automatically approach her, but she will instead go on rambling about how the now-cooked pig is not peppery enough.

The Cook will then apologize, as it seems like they ran out of pepper. The Duchess will tell him to get some more pepper from the Infinite Food, and then he will fly away.

You will get to talk to her, but if you tell her you’re going to see Alice, she will just attack you and initiate a fight with you. You can also escape if you want to.

But if you decide to calm her down, you will have to give her pepper, and then some meat she can use in her cooking. But if you don’t have any meat with you, you can also bring her Dodo.

If Chikerost was in front of the mansion before you entered, you can kill him for some chicken too. And if you’re playing on 0 SEN, just pick up the conveniently placed chicken that’ll be there instead of him.

Bringing her Dodo

When you’re calming down the Duchess, one of the options you can get after giving her pepper is to either give her meat or give her Dodo. If you choose to bring her Dodo, she will appear right next to you and fascinate the Duchess with her “delicious-looking legs”.

And then, the screen will go black and Dodo will disappear. That will calm the Duchess though.

Duchess and Alice

After you talk to the Duchess after calming her down, she will ask you if you’re going to Alice. If you answer positively, she will tell you more about her, and how she even knows of her.

The Duchess will tell you that Alice lost her way in the Looking-Glass Land. And that her aim is the amusement park ruled by the Red Queen, Queensland.

When you ask her how to get there exactly, she will go back and give you the Train Ticket to that place, and tell you to go to the lowest layer of the Pond of Bloody Tears, and that there’ll be a mirror that leads to the Looking-Glass land.

Margaret's advice

She will instruct you further to go to the Abandoned Station, and that trains for Queensland pass through it. She will tell you to show the ticket to the conductor, who’s Hein from the first game.

Croquet Grounds

The Duchess can appear at the Croquet Grounds in Red Castle Frissel if you’re in a covenant with her.

She will be present there with her usual witty dialogue, annoying laugh, and morals – if you haven’t unlocked the secret door in this area to go further into the castle, you can ask her to help you solve the puzzle.

Sea Turtle Restaurant

If you check the green drawer in the top left of the corner of her room you will get a long list of her orders from Mock Turtle’s Sea Turtle Restaurant. The receipt ends with Mock Turtle saying how from tomorrow on the restaurant will be closed, asking nicely the Duchess to never order from them ever again.

The Duchess also regularly goes up to Mock Turtle’s restaurant to check on her even though she’s closed, and that really frightens her.

Wolris Visit

If you fully leveled up Wolris‘ covenant and if you’re on good terms with the Duchess, there’s a chance the Duchess will come to Wolris’ and have a little chat with her about food.

The conversation at first will just be between you and Wolris about the Carpenter and all the poor oysters she ate. Then the Duchess will come into Wolris’ temple and will start complaining about how the Sea Turtle Restaurant is closed and how she couldn’t see anyone inside even when peering through the windows.

The Duchess will ask where are the oysters and Wolris will say how all the oysters died, and their souls are resting in her stomach. The Duchess will be shocked that she and the Carpenter ate all the oysters, Wolris will continue to sniffle while reminiscing about them, and the Duchess will start wrapping things up with a moral that one should set up measures for dealing with a crisis while they’re not in any danger.

The Duchess will end the conversation with few other morals, and then laughingly she will go back to her home.

The Picture

While exploring the Duchess’ Mansion you may notice a small painting attached to the wall. While you may not think anything of it when you see it for the first time, you can interact with it and see an interesting photo of the Duchess, Knight Pumpkin-O, and the Cheshire Cat.

If you are at 0 SEN, the picture will be significantly altered.

Duchess’ Cat

Cheshire Cat used to be the Duchess’ cat some time ago before she suddenly disappeared.

This is confirmed by the picture you can see in one of the rooms in the Duchess’ Mansion, where you can see Pumpkin-O, the Duchess, and the Cheshire Cat together. Although she’s actually a cat and not a humanoid cat girl.

If you have the Cheshire Cat Ring on you equipped, the Duchess will notice and mention how it smells like her cat. She’s confused because she thinks her cat died, so she will give you an Ore Slab because it reminded her of the good old times.

Covenant

The Duchess is one of the characters in the game you can form a covenant with. The level 0 of her covenant will give you Bonus Action 1%, and SPD-5%. As you continue leveling up the covenant, these two effects will significantly increase, and you will also be able to buy Sorcery Tomes from the Duchess.

At one point of talking to her, she will even tell you you can address her with an “affectionate, yet admiring nickname Rette”. Which I assume is derived from her name, Margaret.

Shrinking for the Duchess

At the beginning of the game, you have the option to go through the Hall area and drink the Drink Me potion to shrink yourself so you can pass through a hole that leads to the Pond of Bloody Tears.

There’s an Eat Me item next to a table in the now Giant Hall area, and if you pick it up you can take it to the Duchess. You can get her to eat the Eat Me thing if you completely max out her covenant and try to make love to her.

When she eats the thing the Duchess will become a giant and put you in her mouth, activating a NSFW scene.

Personality

The Duchess is crazy but that makes her really attractive. She wants things to go her own way and will put a lot of effort into making sure they stay that way.

One of her main characteristics is how much she’s glutenous. The Duchess likes to eat a lot, so much so that during one of the NSFW scenes she even decides to eat you. Her eccentricity can make people dislike her if they don’t get to know her better.

Design

By her design, the Duchess is a plump woman (which is quite rare to see in BLACKSOULS games), and she’s also very beautiful. Her ginger hair sets her apart a lot from the rest of the characters in the game, just like her royalty-like clothing.

The light green colors go very well with her ginger hair and eccentric personality.
