Founding Doctor Florence

HomeBLACKSOULSFounding Doctor Florence

Founding Doctor Florence is a character in BLACKSOULS 2 that appears in the DLC3 part of the game. She appears to be half-human and half-dog – she’s the main doctor in the Crimean Nursing Graveyard.

Florence is most likely based on Florence Nightingale who was an English social reformer and the founder of modern nursing.

Appearances | BS2

Florence appears for the first time in the DLC3 part of the game. Although, there are mentions of her even before DLC3, such as when Tweedledee and Tweedledum talk about her.

Opening Cutscene

When you pass through the door in the Hidden Snow Garden, a cutscene will be initiated where Florence and some other doctors will be inspecting a sick, presumably unconscious, person who drifted away towards the place where they’re located.

It’s safe to assume that that person is you, Grimm. You will wake up in a hospital bed in the Crimean Nursing Graveyard once the cutscene ends.

Fighting the Founding Doctor Florence

You will be able to reach Florence after you defeat the Nurse Call boss, a boss that you can get to when you collect all Sparks and then go up the stairs in the main lobby that’ll open up.

After you go through the fog that leads to Florence, she won’t attack you right away but rather tell you that you shouldn’t stay up late. She will also talk about how she knows your body has been altered by Outer Ones because that’s what happened to her too.

You can head back by obeying her orders, or you can go and fight her.

Florence is a very difficult enemy, and she also has a second phase where she becomes the Heavenly Beast Florence.

In her second phase, her domain activates – Divine Beast Domain “Aria of the Sanitizing Angel”, which reduces your attack and defense by 100% and makes recovery from skills and items damage you instead.

Defeating Florence won’t kill her instantly, you will get the chance to either kill her or try to send her to the dungeon. After you defeat Florence, you’ll be able to meet Lingeriena in the room below where Nurse Call was.

Lingeriena doesn’t like Florence and if you spare her, Lingeriena will eventually come into Florence’s room and kill her – Lingeriena frequently calls Florence a “fake angel”.

Blackwell’s Letter

When you defeat Florence, you will have the option to give her Blackwell’s letter.

You can get Blackwell’s letter by letting Blackwell go insane at Ripon Grand Cathedral when you reach 10 Progression Points.

Florence will be very happy to receive your letter, and she will thank you and even pray for you, despite the fact you defeated her in a battle.

After that, she will rest for a bit and disappear.

That’s how you rescue Florence, and have her help you fight Grand Guignol.

Florence’s Diary

On the 4th floor in a room where you find the Nightingale fairytale, there’s a bookshelf where you can find Florence’s diary. You can only read the diary if you have 0 SEN.

The first recorded day in the diary starts with Florence seeing “a vision from Hell” – every room is full of patients, more and more people are getting injured and mentally sick every day, the hospitals are full and it’s unclear what’s happening outside. There isn’t enough staff and the infection is spreading quickly, all nurses and doctors except for Florence went mad, but she says that those who toyed with the corpses of their patients must’ve been mad to begin with, she claims she’s the only sane person there. The situation is getting worse and she’s running out of drugs, maybe even she will go mad.

The second recorded day starts with Florence saying how she must continue treating her patients, she’s used to the stench of rot. The one who brought her there is silently observing and not helping her out, she says how they aren’t toys to be played with – “There’s no food, no water. There is no hope”. Florence questions whether she will “rot and die in this graveyard of a hospital covered in corpses without saving even a single soul”. She doesn’t want to accept that though, she won’t give up, saying how she wants to save all of the patients there.

The third recorded day starts with Florence talking about a patient who passed away in agony, and all she could do was hold his hand and throw him words of comfort. She hates herself for accepting the situation as “nothing could be done”. Then Florence proceeds to mention the twins, and how they were the only ones she was able to transfer to another medical facility (the twins mentioned are the Tweedletwins). Florence says she lost her human body, but she still thinks she has to save as many people as she can.

The fourth day starts with Florence talking about how the immortalization of a patient succeeded. She follows Dr. Jekyll’s advice and uses “the drug made out of those pests” to break the status quo, but Florence can’t ignore the abnormal side effects. One of the soldiers even refused the immortality treatment saying that he’d rather die, Florence thinks this treatment is incompatible with mortality. But all the patients she successfully immortalized lavish her with praise and trust her fully – Florence is glad she was able to save someone for the first time since coming there.

The last recorded day is short, it just says “Exiled together with the hospital. I’ve been released. Today, as always, I must save”.

Personality

Florence seems like a nice person, considering she’s trying to heal people in her own way.  She’s merciful and doesn’t want to fight if not necessary. She would never abandon a patient and she’s ready to give her all if someone’s trying to stop her.

Design

The most noticeable thing about Florence is that she’s not completely human. She’s an anthropomorphic dog, which gives her a dog’s head, ears, and even a tail. Over her mouth, she usually has a muzzle.

Florence’s body is well-built in the right places, and she’s very attractive. She doesn’t seem to be small, or short, and she always wears some kind of blue uniform with a medical cross on her sleeve.
