Fairytales in BLACKSOULS are summoning sorcery books that are used for summoning fairy tale, folk tale, and nursery rhyme characters from real-life famous literary works. They’re a life source for many characters in both games.
Usually, they’re enemies you have to defeat, and then you can use the fairytale item they drop as a key to unlock certain stuff in both games.
However, in the second game, they can even be your allies by summoning them in fights against certain enemies. They manifest themselves as dream spirits.
Fairytales in BS1
In the first BLACKSOULS game fairytales are items you usually get by defeating certain demonbeasts and characters – fairytales are required for filling the empty bookshelves in Alice’s Library, which is necessary for Ending C.
Dorothy will explain what are fairytales exactly somewhere in the beginning part of the game.

Fairytales in BS2
Fairytales in the second BLACKSOULS game aren’t as important as they are in the first game, but there are big benefits that come with collecting fairytales in this game. They can usually be found by defeating madness spirits, or by having dream spirits help you in a fight.
In the first game, you wouldn’t get anything as a reward once you put a fairytale into a bookshelf, but in BS2 you will get a Dream Soul that’ll significantly increase your level.
A Dream Soul increases 5 levels at once. That makes collecting fairytales a good way to level up in the game, especially at the beginning if you target weak fairytales.
