Minecraft Nether Guide (Tutorial, Mods, Maps)

HomeMinecraftMinecraft Nether Guide (Tutorial, Mods, Maps)

The Nether is one of the very few dimensions in Minecraft and also one of the required places you need to go to find certain resources for completing the game. There’s a lot of stuff to see and do in this dimension and it has significantly changed over the past couple of years.

As time passes, it gets more and more interesting, so that’s why I’ll be today covering all the necessities you may want to have in mind about Nether.

Besides the stuff you can find in the Vanilla version of the game – I made sure to include fun mods and maps Nether themed so you can experience that Minecraft dimension to the fullest.

Getting to the Nether Dimension

There are multiple ways you can get to the Nether dimension. The one thing that’s required for it though is to have a working Nether portal that’s lit and active.

You can either decide to make your own Nether Portal, or you can find a ruined one out in the wilderness of your Minecraft world.

Making a Nether Portal

Before building the Nether Portal, the minimum requirement you need to make sure to have is at least 10 blocks of Obsidian.

Nether Portal

For the portal to work it doesn’t need to have edges. You can simply put two blocks of Obsidian on the upper and lower sides of the portal, while you need to make sure to put the rest of the 6 Obsidian on its sides (3 blocks on each side).

The portal can’t be shorter than 5 blocks, but it can be significantly taller and wider.

Ruined Portal

The Ruined Portal is a structure that’s basically a ruined Nether Portal. It can be even found in both dimensions and it’s useful if you don’t want to build a full Nether Portal – since obtaining Obsidian in the first place can be quite annoying.

Ruined Portal

These Ruined Portals are useful, but some can contain a block called Crying Obsidian which prevents the player from lighting the portal itself.

The Ruined Portal is easy to spot because it spawns Nether-like decorations around it as well, along with a chest that contains loot. There is also a giant variation of the Ruined Portal, that one is quite cool.

Biomes in the Nether

Nether has a lot of interesting biomes you can check out and will definitely encounter at least once. All of them are full of fun and interesting content.

Crimson Forest

Crimson Forest

Crimson Forest is a biome in the Nether dimension that resembles how the Overworld looks. This is mostly due to how a new special type of tree grows there and even a reliable source of food that consists of Hoglins.

Basalt Deltas

Basalt Deltas

Basalt Deltas is a biome in the Nether dimension that’s hard to navigate through – it’s full of tricky terrain generation that makes it literally not possible to live in, and highly annoying to move in. You will die at least once here.

Nether Wastes

Nether Wastes

Nether Wastes is a biome in the Nether dimension that’s just the classic Nether before Minecraft’s Nether Update. It’s full of Zombified Piglins and barren terrain that’s quite nostalgic if you’re a frequent player of the older versions of the game.

Soul Sand Valley

Soul Sand Valley

Soul Sand Valley is a biome in the Nether dimension that’s basically a Nether equivalent to Overworld’s desert biomes. It’s a valley full of Soul Sand that will significantly slow you down and make you an easy target for enemies who are trying to kill you.

Warped Forest

Warped Forest

Warped Forest is a biome in the Nether dimension that’s one of the more Overworld-like biomes. It has plenty of trees, normal terrain generation, and not many hostile mobs. Only Endermen can spawn along with Striders. It also comes with a new interesting type of tree you can use in your builds and anywhere else.

Structures in the Nether

Just like any dimension in Minecraft, Nether has a lot of very interesting and fun structures you can explore and go through.

Bastion Remnant

Bastion Remnant

The Bastion Remnant is probably the most interesting structure you can find in the Nether dimension. It’s a neat source of loot and the structure can be great in size. There are 4 different variations of Bastion Remnants that are all different from each other.

It’s made out of blackstone blocks. Just be careful of Piglins and Piglin Brutes, since they can easily kill you in this ruined structure if you’re not careful enough.

Nether Fortress

Nether Fortress

Nether Fortress is the first structure that was added to the Nether dimension. It’s a fortress made out of nether bricks and it’s the only place where Blazes and Wither Skeletons can spawn naturally. The Nether Fortress has loot and blaze spawners – it’s a neat place for exploration and you need to go there if you want to be able to build and fight the Wither.

It’s one of the few ways for you to obtain Nether Wart in the game.

Nether Fossil

Nether Fossil

Nether Fossils are certain variations of fossils, i.e. bone block remains, that can generate in the Soul Sand Valley biome.

Ruined Portal

Ruined Portal in the Nether

Ruined Portals are Nether Portals that are ruined. They can be rebuilt and activated again – they’re a great thing if you’re too lazy to build your own Nether Portal or just need a quick way or a way at all of getting to the Overworld.

Mobs in the Nether

Mobs in the Nether

Nether has a lot of interesting mobs you can encounter. Most of them can only be found in that dimension and their overall design and aesthetic are just very cool, at least in my opinion.

Mobs in the Nether dimension are:

  • Blaze
  • Chicken Jockey
  • Enderman
  • Ghast
  • Hoglin
  • Hoglin Jockey
  • Magma Cube
  • Piglin
  • Piglin Brute
  • Skeleton
  • Strider
  • Strider Jockey
  • Wither Skeleton
  • Zombified Piglin

I decided to put some of the more useful Nether mods out there, or at least the ones I consider useful and good to have.

Nether Maps

Maps that incorporate the theme of the Nether dimension are fun to play – I like them.
