The Cheshire Cat in Serial Experiments Lain is a netizen who seems to be connected with important people in the Wired. He’s a minor character who appears in the 6th episode of the anime called Layer:06 – Kids. Although not literally a cat, the Cheshire Cat in Lain carries that uncanny smile with him which is directly inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire Cat.
Lain doesn’t like the Cheshire Cat because she finds him to be very annoying, so she tells him to shut up and calls him a wannabe Cheshire Cat.
The Cheshire Cat isn’t evil by nature despite being annoying – he brings Professor Hodgeson to the attention of Lain who invented the KIDS system that’s utilized in the Kensington Experiment. The Cheshire Cat also tells Lain about her ability to completely manifest herself in the Wired.
